Strategic Sentry Gun Placement [DM Stages]
Written by Yamaxanadu
I'll start off by saying that I love Sentry Gun to pieces. Place it down in a good place, and it serves you well.
Anyway, how do my fellow Sentry Gun users place their Sentry? It seems like everyone likes placing them in the same locations that I do, and I've found a few cool places where they will do some decent damage before they go down on almost every stage (Tunnel is an exception, as I almost never play that stage).
I'll post some locations where I find them highly useful on every stage I play on:
Neden-1
- On the roof of the main building, pointing towards the back area where the path to the walljump to the roof is located.
- Around the corner of any path to the warehouse, inside or out. Make sure you don't point it directly across the entrance; it can cover more area if you rotate it just a little bit so it doesn't aim into the wall occasionally.
- In the area to the left side of the warehouse (from the bright side of the stage), there is a gate that leads back into the alley where you can walljump up to the higher level (which leads to the roof). Place it on top of any part of the end of the gate and point it towards the bright side of the stage. It covers anyone passing through them, and it's quite hard to pick it off from a distance because there is only one real angle you can destroy it from.
- Inside the little gated area you can use to walljump to the roof from the back area. If anyone tries to take that route in, they are bound to be shot a couple of times before they can get to the roof.
- On the taller (but smaller) building in the back area, point it towards the wide area to the back left corner. It is capable of weakening players who spawn there right off the bat.
Neden-2 - My absolute favorite Sentry Gun stage.
(Note: the "bright side" refers to the area that has the cover wall and the ramps that lead to the second floor of the building. The "dark side" refers to the shaded opposite end of the map. This is relevant depending on which side you spawn on.)
Bright side - Use these if your base for the round is the bright side.
- At the entrance to the warehouse, there are some boxes to the left of the door. Drop your Sentry there and aim it diagonally towards the corner opposite of the door. Covers anyone who passes through that door from the dark side.
- Atop the cover wall, aimed towards the warehouse. Covers both people coming from the warehouse exits and people who cross the separating wall (the wall on the left side from the brighter side with boxes leading to it).
- Atop the roof, set your Sentry at the very edge of the roof towards the dark side. Covers an a lot of camping in the base area, but can be easily picked off from the small building on the dark side.
- Middle area, on the side with the separating wall, the wall travels along the edge of the map until it trails off into the area where the pipes are located. Place your Sentry at the very edge of this wall, and you can cover people who spawn on the roof. Has a lot of angles to be destroyed from, this one is a both effective and easily destroyed.
- Take the shaded alleyway to the dark side base, and drop your Sentry right around the corner pointing towards their entrance to the warehouse. From there, you can fall back behind the wall and corner snipe. This is a really good location since the only way you can be dispatched there is if someone chases you into the alleyway, or drops down from the roof.
- Inside the warehouse, on the second floor, there is a ledge that faces to the entrance to the warehouse from the dark side. Drop your Sentry there, and it can score numerous hits on anyone who passes through the entrance.
- Across from that location is a catwalk that lines the edge of the second floor. On that side, in the left corner, you can drop a Sentry there and get almost equal coverage, and the Sentry itself will be extremely hard to destroy.
- On that same side of the warehouse, on the right side, is a window. Point a Sentry out of that window and it can cover anyone in trying to get into the warehouse from that side.
Dark side - Use these if your base for the round is the dark side.
- Inside the pipe that leads up to the area outside of the entrance to the warehouse, drop your Sentry just inside there and face it outside. Covers anyone who tries to venture into your base from that location.
- Somewhat difficult to place, but it's possible to get a Sentry on top of the high gate that blocks off the tent-like structure and forces them to go around. Covers people on the roof, and if you drop it in place and jump on top of it while on the gate, you can get a rather strong vantage point for dispatching people on roof with your preferred gun.
- Take the warehouse entrance through the window, turn left, and drop your Sentry there among the boxes. Covers anyone entering the warehouse from the bright side.
- Very simple but surprisingly effective (and short-lived usually), jump atop the box right inside the entrance to the warehouse from the bright side, and drop Sentry. Only people who are in range of its fire can dispatch it (attacking it from behind would probably but you in danger of being hit by anyone in the warehouse from the dark side), so it usually leads to free hits before going down quickly. If the enemy doesn't venture into your base area at all, try that one for offensive purposes.
- Anywhere along the gate on the second floor exit of the warehouse, pointing towards the bright side's spawn locations. Pretty obvious which places this Sentry can cover.
- Inside the pipe on the second floor exit of the warehouse. Covers people who try getting to the roof from the bright side.
- Atop the separating wall, pointing towards the boxes that lead up to it from the dark side. You can access this directly from the dark side using a few walljumps to get over the separating wall.
Neden-3
Honestly, this stage isn't very apt for Sentry Guns. Very spaced out and has many paths to almost everywhere in the stage. Also, Sentry Guns placed on the roof will not cover very many people since it has limited depth of perception and will not automatically aim on people that far away.
Since the stage is perfectly symmetrical, a description for any placement applies to both sides. Note that I will only cover DM-oriented placements; TD placements will be covered later, along with the other TD stages.
- Walljump off the wall in the little alley leading to the ground entrance to the warehouse, land on the light post on either side, and point it towards the opposite light post. Both of them will cover anyone who enters through the destroyed wall or exits out of your side of the warehouse.
- You can also place one on on the opposite base's lightposts and point it towards their base to cover anyone who tries to enter the warehouse from the ground, but it is dispatched rather easily from a distance.
- Inside any corner of the warehouse, pointing towards the rest of the warehouse. Generic location, tends to get destroyed relatively easily if anyone is passing through. Not very many other options, unfortunately.
Share any of your Sentry Gun experiences (in DMs, not TDs) here if you have them. :D
